Tag Recapture! GFR2970
Dolphinfish named “Walter”

The Dolphinfish was at liberty in the water for 19 days until its recapture offshore of Los Pascuales, 500 miles south of the original tagging location.

The Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) also commonly known as Dorado or Mahi, named “Walter” (Tag ID: GFR2970) was originally tagged & released by angler Kerri Persons on December 13th, 2015 while fishing with Captain Alex and mate Christian aboard the charter boat EL Nuevo, part of the RedRum Sportfishing Fleet out of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Dolphinfish was estimated to be 27 inches total length and had an approximate weight of 6 pounds.

The Dolphinfish was recaptured on December 31st, 2015 by Captain Hernan Ramos while fishing from his small commercial panga boat Wahoo out of San Patricio, Jalisco, Mexico. Capt. Ramos is a lifelong fisherman who makes his living by providing fish to his local area. When Capt. Ramos brought the Dolphinfish to the dock, the entire marina got excited to see a fish with a scientific tag attached. Ramos reported the tag recovery with the help of his friend Mike Costello, via the online reporting system.

The Dolphinfish was at liberty in the water for 19 days until its recapture offshore of Los Pascuales, approximately 500 miles south of the original tagging location. During that 19 day time period, the fish most likely travelled south with the California Current, following along the shelf edge or drop off where water conditions that were ideal for feeding. At recapture, the Dolphinfish had a total length measurement of 30 inches and weight of 6 pounds 8 ounces. Based on the length estimates, the Dolphinfish was approximately 0.8-1.0 years in age.

The Gray FishTag Research program has been able to shatter the expectations for fish recapture rates thanks to the hard-working professional fishermen on the water day in and day out. Tags are provided free-of-charge to the collaborating professional fishermen, and the tag data is available to the public at www.GrayFishTagResearch.org

The El Nuevo charter boat crew will receive some Gray FishTag gear for their tagging efforts. Captain Hernan Ramos will receive a pair of Costa Del Mar sunglasses, a Tag & Recovery Certificate, and Gray FishTag gear for reporting the tag recovery.

The tagging and research efforts is made possible by our research centers and sponsors AFTCO, AA Video, American Fishing Wire, FECOP, Mold Craft, Costa Del Mar, CR Primo Fishing Tackle, Shadow Graphics, AquaWorld, Crocodile Bay Resort, Grande Alaska Lodge, Los Sueños Resort & Marina, Marina Pez Vela, The Pisces Group and The Zancudo Lodge.
