The Atlantic Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) named “Sparky” (Tag ID: GFR9196) was originally tagged & released by angler Rick Hopkins on February 5th, 2016 while fishing with Captain Raymond Baiz and mate Justin Miller aboard the charter boat Reel McCoy, out of Bud N’ Mary’s Marina in Islamorada, Florida. The Sailfish was estimated to be 60 inches (152.4 cm) total length and had an approximate weight of 25 pounds. [more]

Tag Recapture!! GFR4524 Blacktip Shark, Named “Big James Conrow”
The Blacktip Shark (Carcharhinus limbatus) named “Big James Conrow” (Tag ID: GFR4524) was originally tagged & released by angler Natalie Bryant on December 2nd, 2015 while fishing with Captain Mike Arizzi and mate Kobe Dobbelaer aboard the boat The Capt Mike, out of Deerfield Beach, Florida. The Blacktip Shark was measured at 91 inches total length and had an approximate weight of 190 pounds.
The Blacktip Shark was recaptured 14 days later on December 15th, 2016 by Captain Fred David while fishing from the charter boat Frick and Frack out of Haulover Park, North Miami, Florida. The shark was recaptured in the waters off southeast of Biscayne Bay, approximately 61 miles south of its original tag location. During that 14 day time period, the Blacktip Shark most likely stayed in the waters near the coral reef drop off that runs parallel to the Miami coast line. The Red Grouper (Epinephelus morio) named “Nemo” (Tag ID: GFR6443) was originally tagged & released by angler Dean Roppolo on December 3rd, 2015 while fishing with Captain Dan Bursma and mates Ray Tardiff and Jamie Snediker aboard the charter boat Gulfstream IV, from historic charter boat row in Key West, Florida. The Red Grouper was measured at 17 in total length and had an approximate weight of 4 pounds.
The Red Grouper was recaptured on January 14th, 2016 by angler Laura Scott while fishing with the same boat, the Gulfstream IV and Captain Dan Bursma and mate Ray Tardiff, out of Key West, FloridaThe Red Grouper was at liberty in the water for 43 days until its recapture in the water around Key West, Florida. The tag recovery location was approximately 3.6 miles away from the tag deployment location. During that 43 day time period, the fish most likely stayed within the same local coral reef area, moving from a shallower hard bottom to a slightly deep reef at the time of recapture. At recapture, the Red Grouper had a total length estimate of 17 inches and weight of 4 pounds, which showed no change in fish size. [Full Story]
